How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I have chosen an image of Rhianna as she is similar to my cover model as they are demographically and psychographically similar and would both attract the target audience for my music magazine. Both images are mid-shots and both images have a subjective gaze which makes eye contact to the viewer and therefore pulls the viewer in. Also, both images are similar as both models are smiling which gives the whole cover a more positive look. Both images are studio images which allowed me to position the artificial lighting as I desired. The images are different however with their costumes, Rhianna is wearing a more presentable, "dolled up" outfit where as my model is wearing a more casual outfit. I have done this because the picture is more to do with the person other than the clothes she is wearing. My model is representing an "X-Factor winner" so I have chose an outfit that shows her for the person she is, to show the public what sort of clothes she would usually where. Also, by dressing my cover model in casual clothes, this doesn't intimidate the viewer on the subject of class and therefore the viewer will come to like the cover model more. As for the hair, both models have similar haircuts but I have put a blue hat on my magazine model as part of her identity.

Demographically the models share similarities as they are of the same gender. I have chose to have a female as my cover model as my whole magazine is very feminine. Some would argue that females would prefer to have a "good looking" male as the cover model as a symbol of attraction but my music magazine is a fashion magazine as well as a music magazine, so my cover modal could be seen as a fashion idol for females. My magazine is targeted at a mainstream female audience and my magazine gives them what they want and what they know. For example, my main image and main cover line is based on The X-Factor and that particular T.V shows ratings are huge. My magazine reflects other mainstream magazines. Because my magazine is also a fashion magazine this means that my magazine is very pro-consumerist. The images in the magazine create an image for my audience to be inspired by. The target market for my audience are females who are very "girlie" and like to make sure that they look nice so my magazine could attract a lot of advertisers. This is very beneficial for my magazine as magazines rely on advertising for a considerable percentage of their income and as the images and articles encourage the readers to by the products we advertise, a lot of companies will pay to advertise in my magazine.
